If I were a radio station PD (program director), I’d add these radio-friendly songs to the playlist (if they’re not added already) and give them the spins they should get. Cut down on the Single Ladies‘ and Whatever You Like’s of the world, give others a chance lol.
AC/DC – Rock ‘n Roll Train
Yes, they’re old now but that doesn’t mean they can’t rock it anymore. AC/DC has got a couple of the world’s biggest selling albums of all time under their discography and they’ve proven they can still sell truckloads with their new album Black Ice still sitting in Billboard 200’s Top Twenty after weeks of release. I wanted to put this song up months ago but it felt so out of place from the other stuff I was posting (hell, i was emo to the core)… but it fits right in this time for sure! Better late than never. I love this single of theirs… signature AC/DC style! (dL)
Kanye West – Paranoid (feat. Mr. Hudson)
By early next year you’ll probably be hearing this one all over radio, but it will be with Rihanna doing the guest vocals. For the meantime, enjoy this version… I love it! Its the danciest song on his brilliant album 808’s & Heartbreak. Auto-tune never sounded so good haha. (dL)
The White Tie Affair – Candle (Sick and Tired)
The White Tie Affair is a power pop / electronic rock band from Chicago, Illinois. Currently signed to Epic Records, the band’s music has been featured on such TV shows as MTV’s The Hills and No Good TV. They remind me of Metro Station a little bit. This song sounds a bit generic but I like it anyway… in fact, I like it a lot. Their debut album Walk This Way is out now. (dL)
Lily Allen – The Fear
Finally, Lily Allen’s second album has a release date… February 9th, 2009. Mark your calendars people, its gonna be good. About this song, she originally put it up on her myspace page back in June as a demo called “I Don’t Know” and now its the official first single, mastered, and titled “The Fear”. Nevertheless, great song! Not as spunky as her singles from her previous album but it doesn’t subtract from the fact that this tune is ace. The new album’s gonna be called It’s Not Me, It’s You, haha typical! (dL)
Shinedown – Second Chance
Modern Rock radio has given them some love for a few years now but they once tasted some mainstream success when American Idol’s Chris Daughtry’s performance of their single “I Dare You” caused that song to enter the top 40 chart of CHR/Pop radio. The power of idol. Here’s the band’s conscious attempt at getting that second mainstream hit… it sounds like it could do it. This one’s coincidentally called “Second Chance” from their current album The Sound of Madness. (dL)
Jazmine Sullivan – Bust Your Windows
You guys probably heard her name last week when she was nominated in the Best New Artist category for the 2009 Grammy’s. If you didn’t know who she was, well now’s the time to get to know her as she stands a mighty chance of winning that award even with the likes of Duffy and Adele being nominated in the same category. Her album Fearless (Taylor Swift, is that you?) is one of my favourite r&b releases of the year. This girl’s got mighty fine chops, I was blown away by her voice when I first heard her sing coz I wasn’t expecting anything like this. Check her out for yourself and tell me what you think. (dL)
Far – Pony
This band i know nothing about but if you recognize the song’s title, you’re probably thinking about the right song. Yes, it’s a cover of Ginuwine’s biggest hit from the 90’s and one of my all-time favorite songs lol (i kid you not!) It’s a pretty straight-forward cover, only rock-ish. its still the same song so i still like it just the same. “If you’re horny, let’s do it! ride it – my pony. my saddle’s waiting, come and jump on it“. Is that clear enough for ya? Haha! (dL)
Ne-Yo – Real Thing
This one was left off of the official tracklisting of Ne-Yo’s current grammy-nominated album Year of The Gentleman. I’m baffled. They should’ve kept it on in there instead of making it a bonus track available only to a few. Good ballad from the guy, better than his current single “Mad” in my opinion. (dL)
Incubus – Love Hurts
This is turning out to be a surprise hit for the guys of Incubus. Its from their 2006 album Light Grenades. The single was released last year to little success and currently the band is no longer on tour to promote/support the album and are on a break. But a few months ago one radio station added this song to their playlist and put it on slow rotation. I guess audience feedback was great, many other radio stations have followed suit since then and now “Love Hurts” is a hit. Its good to know radio still gives second chances to old shouldve-been-hits. Nice song. (dL)
Adele – Chasing Pavements
Here’s another old one. I featured her about a year ago and nobody took notice except her record company asking me to take down her song. Also put up her song “Hometown Glory” sometime last June/July and only Kimmyk noticed. Fast forward to today and this is slowly getting a considerable amount of airplay on radio, she topped the iTunes chart some weeks ago after performing on SNL as a sub for the artist who wasn’t able to make it there as the musical guest, and on top of all that Adele just received a Best New Artist nomination for the 2009 Grammy Awards. This time around, if you haven’t already, I believe you’re gonna give this girl and this song some attention. Next time, listen to me! lol. Jk. So here is “Chasing Pavements”, the second time around. Her album’s called 19. (dL)
India.Arie – Therapy (feat. Gramps Morgan)
Another feel-good song from India’s upcoming album Testimony, Vol.2: Love and Politics. Now I’m confused, I thought “Chocolate High” was the single and now they sent a promo CD of this song to radio stations. Either way, I’m just glad we are hearing some new stuff from India. Can’t wait for the new album come February! (dL)
Alicia Keys - Saviour
I didn’t know Alicia’s As I Am was re-released last November. This was one of the three new songs on there… my favorite of the three. Old school high hehe… makes me wanna snap my fingers! (dL)
Lesley Roy – Unbeautiful
Watch out for this girl… she has a really nice husky voice that’s a little bit Pink, and a little bit Brandi Carlile. Promising new artist from Ireland. Thanks to Jeff (from Iowa) for the heads up on this one! Good find mate!
(dL)
Lady Gaga – Poker Face
While America has just finally embraced Lady Gaga’s first single “Just Dance” (we’ve had this since May this year, that took forever to get up there), Canada has just given her her second consecutive Billboard chart-topper with this one this week right here… “Poker Face” is another solid pop effort from Gaga. I admit I didn’t notice this song till a few weeks ago when it randomly popped out of my iPod. Now I like it! Jam! Just wanna say, Christina Aguilera should stop imitating her… she’s better than that. Done. (dL)
Wes Carr – You
This year’s Australian idol winner is quite talented! Well, I could say the same for the winner a couple years back (Damien Leith)… but let’s keep the focus on Wes. Check out his performances on youtube… stellar! He even made me like Michael Jackson’s “Black or White” haha. Now, go ahead and download this song. That’s right, click the link up there and listen to the mp3. Are you done? Would you believe me if I told you that this is the winner’s single? a.k.a. his “A Moment Like This”! Now ain’t that just mad wicked?! This totally sh*ts on “Time of My Life”, no magic rainbows on this one hahaha. Aussies rule and I’m not one. (dL)
Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds – I Need A Love Song
This one makes me miss the nineties. In some way, I share Babyface’s sentiments on this one… take a listen to what he’s saying on this one
haha. In my opinion, its his best song in years… many years. (dL)
Keri Hilson – Promise In The Dark
She can’t seem to get a hit on her own. Her debut album’s been pushed back yet again to early 2009. Maybe a ballad could be the answer, maybe this song could be it. I like this, its pretty. (dL)
Marques Houston – Sunset
Aaaah… something to chill to… let’s end this set with the smooth croons of r&b vocalist Marques Houston who channels Prince and Robin Thicke in his new single “Sunset”. Love… love… love this song! This is my jam, jam, jam! “coz you’re my sunset… set… set… set…” (dL)
