Lemme Talk About Idol

As expected, I have not been as dedicated to watching American Idol as I used to back in seasons 4 and 5. I usually just skip the auditions and wait till hollywood week to start watching. I saw a couple of audition episodes for this season but my attention span was almost close to zilch. If you’re reading this, you’ve probably been watching too… that must mean that you also sat through the horrific first performance show  last week of the first batch of 12 of the top 36 finalists. It was quite excruciating, to say the least, sitting through two hours of safe and odd song choices as well as awkward performances from the dreamers and the wannabes. The show was kind of a dud.

American Idol 8 - Judges

I was rooting for Anoop Desai but darn it he didn’t make it. Casey Carlson was pretty, that’s it lol. Tatiana Del Toro was a revelation but was being creepy instead of being annoying as previously portrayed. Alexis Grace was surprisingly good but knocked-out-of-my-socks good it was not. Danny Gokey sang well, I gotta hand it to him. But… there’s a big BUT… I kind of get the feeling that he’s a douchebag. His wooooooo’s when he first got granted the golden ticket to hollywood and then last week when he was told that he’s in the top 12… kind of arrogant, don’t you guys think? Plus they use his backstory A LOT (yes, someone died, now please let her rest in peace!) , he gets plenty of airtime, he got the pimp spot, the over-the-top praises from the judges… its like he’s being shoved into our throats. I don’t like it. He’s a front-runner, yes, but let me be the first to tell you… and remember me as being the first to tell you this… he won’t win. I can’t explain it, I always get a feeling about how it all plays out as the show slowly progresses and that I can assure you 99.5% will happen. I like his voice though.

This week, we got a much much better show in my opinion. I like more of the people on this batch and see more potential in many of them than the ones from last week. Too bad only three people have to go through… darn it their new old system sucks. Allison Iraheta totally surprised me, if a girl has any chance at all this year to take the title (coz the guys are obviously stronger this season) it would be her. Adam Lambert, the other front-runner… sigh, he got the pimp spot, too. His performance was over-the-top but in my opinion hardly enjoyable. What is up with his hair?! I don’t know who’s ‘fro i abhor more, his or Kai Kalama’s. Adam’s a little too polished and too hollywood for his own good. The guy’s got potential, I can see that, but I’m not sold on his talent yet. We’ll see. The other ones I liked were Megan Corkrey… she picked a Corinne Bailey Rae song that I love and was weirdly wiggly as she performed it, I thought it was charming haha. Another female that stood out was Mishavonna Henson who sang Train’s “Drops of Jupiter”, but the judges were really looking for things to nitpick about her performance as if they don’t want her to get through to the next round. Baaaad judges! Matt Giraud was another favorite of mine who crashed performing Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida”, hopefully he gets a wildcard spot if he doesn’t get voted through tonight. Kris Allen was also really good… I love the song he chose (Michael Jackson’s “Man In The Mirror”) to begin with so that definitely helped a lot. Finally, a real genuine down-to-earth good guy amongst this year’s crop of male ego’s who are so full of themselves… I’m rooting for this one coz he’s an underdog lol. If he gets through, he’ll be my Elliott Yamin for the season… puts me on a nervous breakdown every results night because he’s always in the bottom of the pack haha. Jesse Langseth deserves a mention, too. Not bad. The others I already forgot, except for Nick Mitchell/Norman Gentle. Who could forget that?! lol.

Next week, Ariana Afsar is on my radar… i like her haha. The others I forgot, we’ll see.

As of last week I was already losing hope and declared season 8 of this show to be its worst season yet. It was that bad I think. Now, I think there is hope. If the right people get through, maybe we can get another pool of talent that’s in the same caliber as that of season 4. For the record, my favorite top 12 was season 5 (the one with Chris Daughtry, Elliott Yamin, Katharine McPhee) and season 7 (last year – David Cook, Jason Castro, Brooke White, Archuleta). Let’s just hope that the good ones (Anoop Dogg included) get another chance and get spots for the wild card show next week.

Speaking of Brooke White, she’s getting ready to release a new album pretty soon (I knew it was bound to happen). She’s scheduled to perform a new song on tonight’s results show. This here is the song… “Hold Up My Heart”. It sounds quite dated, very 70’s female singer-songwriter type. Very her hehe. I like it, its got a really pretty melody. It will have a hard time getting played on the radio, but a miracle could happen… all it takes is an open mind and a proper musical/soundtrack placement on some movie’s pivotal scene or a commercial. Best of luck mama Brooke, I still am a fan!

listen: Brooke White – “Hold Up My Heart” [dL/dL2] now available on iTunes!

I just wanna say… Danny Gokey looks and sometimes sounds like Robert Downey Jr. Matt Giraud is like a cross between Michael Buble and Elliott Yamin. Allison Iraheta looks and acts like Brittany Murphy. Tatiana del Toro is a chunkier Katharine McPhee. Jasmine Murray sounds like Fergie. Mishavonna Henson could be a resident of Whoville.

Case closed… for now.

Coming up next… a bunch of songs… again :D

They Call Her Love

Even though people think that today is a holiday invented by greeting card companies to make people feel like crap (that’s from one of my all-time favorite movies, Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind), I still love it if only for the nice fuzzy feeling it brings in the air seeing lots of people make the extra effort to make other people feel special and loved. Aaah, amidst all the craziness happening the world over, we all know the only thing it really needs to fix it all is something that can be summed up in four letters but oh so difficult to define unless you’re a little kid. Hmmm… I wonder what it is? Hehehe! Happy Valentine’s Day everone!

and here’s another special treat that fits the day… have you guys been watching the new season of American Idol? I’m actually a fan of the new judge, Kara Dioguardi, as a songwriter and as a singer. I’m betting most of you have not yet heard her sing aside from her little sing-off with bikini girl some weeks ago lol. Well, here’s Kara performing a new song she co-wrote with future “rock” star Jason Reeves (yey, he finally got a major label deal with Warner Bros.). I really like ‘em both… the song’s called “Terrified”. I heart it!

You Can Never Say Never While We Don’t Know When

This is my absolute favorite new song at the moment. It makes my heart ache at just the right amount… enough to make me feel that i’m still human. bow. hehe! The song is “Never Say Never” by The Fray.

Some things we don’t talk about,
Rather do without and just hold the smile
Falling in and out of love
Ashamed and proud of, together all the while

You can never say never
While we don’t know when
But time and time again
Younger now than we were before

Don’t let me go

Picture you’re queen of everything
Far as the eye can see under your command
I will be your guardian when all is crumbling
I’ll steady your hand

You can never say never
While we don’t know when
But time, time and time again
Younger now than we were before

Don’t let me go

We’re pulling apart and coming together again and again
We’re growing apart but we pull it together,
Pull it together again

Don’t let me go

The Fray’s self-titled new album is now out! You guys should go get it!

Back with a Vengeance and a Post-January Mix

Hello! What have you guys been up to lately? Me I’ve been a little busy, but kinda not… busy figuring things out, jobhunting (somebody give me a job! I need to make some money lol), thinking haha. My New Yorker cousins are in town for a couple of weeks. One of them’s getting married this weekend and the ceremony’s going to be here in Cebu, that’s why their whole family’s here. Aaah… I feel there’s going to be a lot of trips down memory lane for these guys and for my brother and I too coz we were all quite tight back when we were all just kids. Sigh, I kinda miss being a kid when I think about those carefree days. Its kind of hard trying to decide on where to take them out for fun here because c’mon they’re from New York… they have everything there. Well, except for mountains and beaches. But stuff to do? I’m kinda figuring it out still… I want to make their stay here memorable so its kind of a lot of pressure on me, something I gave myself haha. You guys have any suggestions?

Went to Manila over the past weekend for no particular reason… of all the places to go find myself I chose hectic and chaotic Manila. It was worth it though… had a chance to bond with a couple of good friends, to experience the metropolis in a whole new different way from before – on foot, and dine at some nice restaurants. A little dash of history and art via a visit to the museum didn’t hurt either. I know it sounds a bit geeky but I don’t know, it actually made me feel like I should’ve paid more attention in history class way back in the day. (errr, i mean a few years ago. =P ) My foot hurt after three days of non-stop walking, my head was surprisingly not spinning even with our lack of proper sleep, and I stuffed my belly with lots and lots of yummy food. Sheesh I need to balance those off with some trips to the gym. My account of those food indulgences will soon be posted at DiningCebu.com, check out the site for some of our reviews of Cebu’s restaurants, cafes and food in general. And leave some comments! *wink wink* haha!

I highly recommend the ones from 3OH!3 (how do you pronounce their name?), Frightened Rabbit (heard this one from my friend’s multiply page), Susie Suh (this one too), Sigur Ros (need I say more?), Arms (omg best song ever!), Starsailor (they’re back!), Bon Iver (his album For Emma, Forever Ago was my #1 album for 2008), and Annie Lennox’s cover of Ash’s “Shining Light”. The others are good too so give ‘em a chance. I’ll try to make a Valentine’s Day special mix… I’ve got one really good song so far. at least 10 more to go haha… anyone wanna make some recommendations?

Take care mah peeps! Hope you have an awesome week!
