I can’t believe this, it’s too fast! Here is a new song by this year’s American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert. Rumor is that it’s the first single from his upcoming debut album (working title: On With The Show). Nooooo! The song’s not bad, but its… safe. Not particularly memorable, and not really what I expected from him. I don’t hate it (yet), but it does lack personality. Maybe it’ll sound better live? What do you guys think? I’m at a loss for words.
update: Whew! Apparently, there will be an album coming out in a couple of months… of songs that Adam recorded back in 2007 and 2008 which will be released by a different record label from the one he signed to after placing 2nd on idol. This song is not the single, and it is not new. That was close!
The Decemberists – “The Hazards of Love 2 (Wager All)“ – My favorite song from what may possibly be the best album of 2009. You guys should listen to their album The Hazards of Love, its a classic in the making. They don’t make ‘em like these anymore.
Moby – “Pale Horses“ – This single sort of goes back to the sound that made him popular. However, Moby’s independently-produced Wait For Me will be one that is less experimental than his past three albums, which saw the artist under an environment of meeting expectations from the industry and of pressure on topping himself. Instead, the new record was made under a more relaxed but still highly creative and artistic atmosphere. Look out for it at the end of June. The first single alone is a good indication of how good its probably going to be. I’m liking it, I am stirred once again… haunting.
Regina Spektor – “Eet“ – I was excited when I found out Regina Spektor had a new album coming out, but was slightly disappointed with the choice of the first single. “Laughing With” was kind of dreary, and uninteresting musically. The other songs on the album, however, are winners. Far is the title of the new album and “Eet” is one the songs that could be a future single since she has already released a video for it. I can’t help but hear Tori Amos’ influence on her, I love it!
Blind Pilot – “3 Rounds and a Sound“ – Great new band! They’re opening for The Decemberists on tour starting this month… that is a mighty good combination. This song closes their current album of the same name and was featured in an episode of the TV series Chuck a few weeks ago. You guys should listen to their album…. it’s a genuinely captivating and beautiful record.
Third Eye Blind – “Don’t Believe A Word“
- This is the first single off of the band’s new album Ursa Major coming out August 18th. If this is any indication of the songs on the new LP, I’d say they might have gotten some of their mojo back after the slight letdown that was their 3rd outing Out of The Vein – which actually had its moments but didn’t come close to the creativity of their 2nd album Blue and intensity of some of the songs on their self-titled debut. Not jumping up and down just yet, but I like this one!
Phoenix – “1901“
- Phoenix is a French alternative rock band that’s been around for over a decade enjoying moderate success with previous albums. This year they released Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix which is slowly setting them up for even greater success worldwide. The single featured right here was released as a free download last February, and as I have been slacking overly much lately here it is almost four months later haha. This could be big!
Dave Matthews Band – “Why I Am“
- DMB is one of my all-time favorite bands because of the one-two-three punch of their albums Under The Table and Dreaming, Crash, and Before These Crowded Streets back in the mid-90’s. They sorta lost their groove with subsequent albums (but to a lesser extent on Everyday and The Lilywhite Sessions), and after they released the thoroughly disappointing Stand Up back in 2006 I thought I had given up on them. Thank goodness for Big Whiskey & The GrooGrux King, they have released an album that could stand side by side the three I have loved for years from them. This right here folks is how Dave, Leroi, Boyd and the rest of the band got their groove back. The song up there is an album standout in my opinion, a standout among many other standouts. Check out the song, and grab a copy of the album!
Uncle Kracker – “Smile“
- Not much of a fan of this guy, but I loved a few of his previous singles, most notably “Yeah Yeah Yeah”, “Follow Me”, and his cover of Dobie Gray’s “Drift Away”. After six years on hiatus he’s coming back with a brand new album Happy Hour set for a September release. This is the first single off ot that… it’s a laid-back, catchy, sway-inducing, head-bobbin’ ditty that could become huge if radio touches it. What a hook!
Colbie Caillat – “Fallin’ For You“
- And she’s back! I’m not over her yet. Not much has changed with her sound, just they way I’d prefer it. Her new album Breakthrough comes out in August and I’m happy to say that she did not abandon the team that worked with her on her debut album Coco… they’re all back for a second go at it. I’m digging the results so far. This could be a cheesefest if anyone else sings it, but its Colbie so it works just right. Lookin’ forward to more new music from her! (Kakakilig ever lol)
Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johansson – “Relator“
- I can’t believe they have an album of collaborations coming in September. It will be called Break Up. Surprisingly, the tandem works as demonstrated by this single. I’m a fan of Pete Yorn, but not of Scarlett. Maybe this could change my mind, we’ll see soon. I like this a lot!
Rob Thomas – “Give Me The Meltdown“
- This is from Rob’s new album Cradlesong coming in July. I don’t know why I’m not as excited about him anymore, but he has not gone under my radar yet. I think I overplayed his last album too much when it came out. I love this new song more than the first single “Her Diamonds”. There is still hope, maybe the new album will re-ignite my like for this talented artist.
Howie Day – “Be There“
- Howie took too long to release new material and he came up with this? Its the same sound. Not exciting but not bad. Maybe there’s better stuff on the rest of the album, it’s called Sound The Alarm due out on August 25th. Verdict will come when I hear the rest of the songs. For now, this is just alright.
Lenka – “Knock Knock“
- Love her album, love this song. The song’s a little cheesy but it’s genuine and that’s what makes it good. Here comes my favorite word… cute.
M. Ward – “Rave On” (featuring Zooey Deschanel)
- Another well-respected singer-songwriter collaborating with a Hollywood actress who sings on the side. This is a cover of an old song. In my opinion their collabo is magic. Great feel-good song! M. Ward’s new album Hold Time was released earlier this year… check it out coz its good.
