Robyn’s Got A Lotta Booty Applications

It’s been a great week musically in my world coz a lot of my favorite artists/bands just released new songs and are coming up with new albums within the next few months. You’ll get to hear all those new songs within the next few days right here.

RobynFirst up… Robyn! Apparently, she’s releasing a lot of new music this year – three albums. First one, tentatively titled Body Talk, comes out in June. She premiered one of the new songs on her website last week. The track’s called “Fembot”. It sounds just about what you would expect from a progressive standpoint coming in from how her last album sounded like.  I don’t  know if this song is the first single but I am addicted to it now. The part that starts at about 1 minute 2 seconds into the track is pop audio orgasm-inducing. haha! “My system’s in mint condition. The powers up on my transistors…” The song’s got some very tech-y sexual references using very catchy word play. And for your reference, I included the song’s lyrics below just in case you would want to try to impress someone with double entendre tech-sounding innuendo.

Coz You’re Hangin’ By A Fingertip

Never underestimate the power of a really good song. Those who say that there’s no magic in pop music anymore are just not looking hard enough. Point in case… here’s one — a very well-crafted melodic gem of a song from Aqualung (Matt Hales). It’s the first single from his new album Magnetic North due out April 20th. Be prepared to feel good after this hehe. I am liking the lyrical play on this one!

Also, take note of the female voice in the song. That’s Kelly Sweet, who has also been working hard on her second album which is due for release by September 2010. She and Matt Hales have also done some collaborations for her own album, one of which appears right here for your listening pleasure. Its an unfinished version of a song on there called “Sailors In The Sky”. Let me just say that I am very excited for these two albums, and slightly a bit more for the seeming shift in musical direction for Kelly’s music.

The Day We Ran Into The Sea

paper aeroplanes - the day we ran into the seaCheck out this Welsh duo slowly making a splash in the indie pop scene. They are guitarist Richard Llewellyn and vocalist Sarah Howells… collectively known as Paper Aeroplanes. Their brand of music is evocative, heartfelt and rootsy to say the least. Sarah Howells’ vocals slithers through their songs’ melodies like an ice-cold bottle of Coca Cola on a scorching summer day. Haha! Thanks to Mike for this recommendation.

I’m listening to their debut album, The Day We Ran Into The Sea, right now. The songs that are making an impression so far are “Lifelight”, “Sing It”, “Not As Old”, “Take It Easy”, and the song below, “Cliche”. Discover them for yourself. The album’s out now.

Paper Aeroplanes – “Cliche (from The Day We Ran Into The Sea)

But it’s a cliche and that’s all I have
Try to get over you but I can’t
Cliche, not anything more
But that’s what I loved you for
And though the songs have been sung before
I sing along
… I still long for you / My first tattoo / My right and wrong / You are my favorite song

…and while you’re at it, you might wanna check out their EP Lifelight for other songs that aren’t on the debut.

All I Want is For You To…

Rolling StonesI’m addicted to the Rolling Stones’ “Beast of Burden” right now. I am aware of my lack of knowledge of the Stones’ catalog and I apologize to those that I have offended because of that fact haha. Another apology should be made because I’ve never heard of this song prior to it being performed on American Idol a couple of days ago. Before Tuesday night I only knew of the existence of such Stones classics as “Paint It Black”, “Sympathy for The Devil”, “Wild Horses”, “Satisfaction”, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”, and a few others I can’t recall right now. Sorry music fans, I’m only human and not an all-in-one music library hehe.

This post is dedicated to the version of “Beast of Burden” that Lee Dewyze did on AI. I thought it was an excellent cover. He changed up the arrangement of the song but not too drastically that it won’t be recognizable. It’s so laid back, melodic, and sing-song-y, hence my addiction to it. I’ve also now figured out why I’m a fan of this guy, its because he sounds part Adam Duritz from Counting Crows and part Drew Copeland from Sister Hazel… two of my favorite bands.

Other than Lee, the star of the night was sooooo Siobhan Magnus. She is a beast! I love her haha. I have a feeling its going to be her and Lee in the finale. My other faves, Crystal and Didi, did pretty well, too. They’re probably gonna come in 3rd and 4th when all is said and done. We shall see.

Baby, There’s A Shark In The Water

VV Brown - Travelling Like The LightVV Brown, real first name Vanessa, is a British singer/songwriter/producer who came out with an album in the UK back in July 2009 called Travelling Like The Light. Critics liked what they heard. She got a performance slot in the TV talk show Later with Jools Holland, and the likes of UK’s The Independent (newspaper) and The LA Times named her as someone to watch in 2009. The album wasn’t commercially successful though, and the single release “Shark In The Water” didn’t make much of a dent inside the UK Top 40 peaking at a lowly #34… which in the U.K. is not very relevant.

Now, things may start to pick up soon for miss VV because that same single is slowly starting to attract increasing airplay stateside. The song is currently rising in the US Hot AC chart knocking on the doors of the Top 30 while Pop is showing some signs of interest in her. Who wouldn’t be interested with a song title like that? Haha! I wouldn’t be surprised if this turned out to be a decent hit for this girl, because the song’s quite interesting and catchy. It sounds like a cross between an Amy Winehouse and a Natasha Bedingfield song… her voice straddles the same middle ground between those two, too. Hopefully this finally turns into the lucky break for this talented newcomer. Check out the song below and share your thoughts by hitting the comment section. ;)

Wrong Way Going Down The One Way Road

john butler trio - one way roadLet me pick up the energy level around here since I’ve been putting up a lot of slow songs these past few posts. Heard of the John Butler Trio? They’re an ARIA award-winning roots/jam band from Australia, and yes the ARIA is the Aussie equivalent of the Grammy’s.  The band has toured the U.S. before, supporting acts such as Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, G. Love and Special Sauce, among others. They were also part of Lollapalooza in Chicago back in 2008. Now that you know those facts, I hope you have a little idea of what to expect from this band.

The group has had a few lineup changes lately but still in tact is founder John Butler. Their new album, April Uprising, is coming out March 26th 2010. The song up for your listening pleasure here is the set’s first single which was released a couple of months back. “One Way Road” is a song about taking a stand against the so-called powers-that-be. Listen to the song for a much much clearer vision of what this band’s trying to say here. Great great song!

You Took Something Perfect and Painted it Red

I’ve been getting into Daniel Merriweather’s “Red” lately. Truth be told, I gave this Aussie guy a listen sometime in the middle of 2009 and didn’t get any sort of impression. Now listening to his album, Love and War, I have no clue about what was wrong with it when I heard it the first time back then. His soulful sound is cut from almost the same cloth as those of James Morrison and Paolo Nutini so it should be no surprise that I like this. But it took this long for me to appreciate his songs. Check out his other songs if you like this one.
